First 'explored' by none other than Bnugle over 5 years ago, he had this to say...

He wasn't wrong, and since that profound statement he has since retired!

Essentially a 2 bore concrete box which carries the River Beal underneath the M62 and nearby carriageway for just over 500m.

I've been for a poke down here before with SL but never bothered with any pics, so at a loose end today and practically on my doorstep I headed back for a few snaps.

The upstream section is by far the most interesting bit as two weirs pass behind Ellenroad Engine House Steam Museum.

Getting in and out is fun also; stung to death by nettles and ripped to shreds by Mr Bramble u/s, still I managed a suntan in drains, crazy but true.

At the end of it all a quick traverse across a low bridge and a stride to the local for a cold one..

 and drops two weirs ahead of the infall via a twin concrete box

If you take stock, you will notice two smaller penstocks, one of which is/was designed to divert flow from the nearby engine house.

Heading downstream,

 a short open section exits  a twin concrete box ahead of a 4ft weir

A small watercourse joins on the left

The final section is a further 6ft box carrying the river downstream

Eventually daylight can be seen at the outfall, beyond which an original stone bridge which now serves the nearby Metrolink.

All in all a decent Sunday stroll and finally good to get back down here after all these years.
