One Shot, Manchester

River Skankin'...

Essentially A CSO, comprising a 5ft Brick pipe and a storm overflow upstream, which serves one of Manchester's older sewers
 - 'Interceptor L' according to the records.

Shouts to ConcreteJungle for reppin' this place back in 2009 when the Manchester draining scene was very much alive & kicking..

Probably only ever visited by a handfull of people, if that ?

(Hardly surprising after having waded almost neck deep in festering river water, just to climb into the fucker).

I had always wanted to see this place, yet never really went out of my way to find it.

Despite having the info under my nose, it was just something I hoped I would stumble upon whilst checking other systems in the area.

This never really happened, and after following up what I thought was it I kind of gave up on the place, although I was always close ;)

Having followed up on a couple of leads recently, I again turned my attention to this place, I even gleaned a clue from CJ himself.

Although I'm still clueless as to "The Bus Stop" as one manhole is on a back street, the other in the middle of a busy carriageway..

I decided to don the leaky chesties, in the end I might as well have done this in my underpants I was that soaked.

The journey starts with a rather dodgy trip down the river through silt, some deeper bits and all manner of junk

After some faffing about you can smell the stench from the overflow, long before you get anywhere near it, proper grim is this one!

Now the fun begins, to get to the actual outfall, which is literally 2m away at this point the level gets deeper & deeper and then some.

Suffice to say my chesties breached and filled with some of the skankiest river fest I have ever had the displeasure.

Clinging to the crumbling brickwork I managed to haul myself in.

The outfall is stepped just like HFLB, however this one is quite deep until about 5m in

(Also the vapours that linger aren't pleasant,
infact it's only until you pass the first curved section does it appear clean)

Once in a barely 5ft RBP serves as the overflow

A short distance in, I could hear the familiar chimes from a manhole overhead, soon enough a large inspection chamber presented itself

(Clearly a later addition to the much older system)

My battery had died so a GPS fix wasn't possible, however I managed to locate the huge plant lid above ground later on.

I pressed on, as the brick pipe twisted and turned beneath the streets, negotiating steamy pockets of bad air

Eventually the sound of the sewer could be heard in the distance, and then ahead was a large brick chamber with a curved overflow weir

The other side the interceptor sewer enters via a 5ft RBP curves around a channel and exits through a 2ft pipe, partially obscured by a defunct penstock.

Rusty step irons, a good 10m upto a lid on the Mancunian Way

I took pics of the Outfall just as I was leaving

Whilst I was taking this shot, it began to piss down and I didn't fancy getting stuck so packed up quick and legged it.

I'm glad to have finally seen this, however I don't think I'll be rushing back!

'Voir, Bradford

Ojay/MJS/Squirrell...

MJS had pestered me for the past 18 months to rope him down here for a poke about, so one evening I met up with him & Squiz0r.

High on top of Idle Moor next to a relay transmitter for the one at Emley Moor is this large dis-used underground 'voir.

You can get some nice pics if you adopt some patience, in the end I was too busy dicking about with Squiz so left MJS to it.

A mixture of pics from us both...

Crinkle Cut, Oldham

Doorstep Draining..

A short culverted section of the Irk, at just under 100m the river is carried through 2 sections of CMP, with an overflow weir from the nearby sewer sandwiched in between.

I did plan to head back for some better shots but the weather has been dire since and after all the effort for such a small drain I bowed out..

When I originally visited here much earlier in the year, UU were fitting some new grille on the infall.

Here is an older pic

When I returned, the newly fitted grille prevents any easy access, so I decided to head down a nearby manhole, that too was seized and wouldn't budge.

Eventually I managed to squeeze in from the outfall, infact probably another reason I cba heading back as I got a right soaking.

Once in a right stoop down a slippery CMP for a good 50m.

Overflow Weir - here, the twin 4ft RCP's have been capped to the sewer beyond, with twin PVC 2ft pipes retro fitted.

(Sorry these can't be made out in the pic)

I did attempt to lift the grid to the sewer side also, but the bloke who's land it was on wasn't too happy and isn't someone you'd like a run in with!

trunKate, Oldham

Reppin' Oldham's Trunks...

Essentially an outfall sewer serving the South of Oldham, which truncates at the works.

I've been trying to follow this for a while now, but bad weather, impassable pipes and lids in some sketch locations haven't made it easy..

Anyway after a full day of fail earlier in the week, I decided to have another crack at this one, having been close to finding something I could actually walk in.

The weather looked grim and some serious Cumulonimbus' were sweeping in.

Luckily the weather held out, however I did manage to tear my new thigh waders and subsequently became soaked and covered from head to toe in fatty deposits & p00p.

Having eventually found a safe lid,
I headed down into a chamber no bigger than a shoe box

Below was a small inspection landing,
with another ladder down to the sewer below

Once down the sewer flows from left to right
via a 5ft RCP and exits through a 2ft iron pipe

I followed the sewer a good while up the slippery RCP,
before passing a large multi-level Storm Overflow chamber

A non-screened CSO, (aside from the barriers that serve as weirs to filter out the solids).

There were an array of ladders that led to each part of the system, I decided to head up for a mooch.

Once up top,
a larger landing overlooking the sewer below

(A manhole upto the site above and a makeshift spillway via a PPE pipe)

Concious of the weather I didn't want to hang about, as there was no safe exit above, and I later found the overflow provided no exit either.

I headed down another set of ladders,
which took me below the sewer and into the main overflow

A 5ft RCP

(Carries any discharge to the watercourse below at capacity)

I headed back above ground to take another look downstream

Here are a few pics I took with my phone the other week just after it pissed down

(Sadly the level was still too deep to walk)

It's here the sewer emerges through a 6ft RCP as it passes through another 'open air' screening chamber before reaching the works.

Gorton Falls Re Re Re-visited

Ojay/Camera Shy...

"fuck off your on private property"....... "and take your shopping trolley with you" - Standard.

After having spent all day trying to work out an alternative way in since they have fenced off the original access, I returned in the evening with CS for another look around.

I only took a few pics...

In the Ghetto

Shafted, Gorton

WTF?...

I came across this disused shaft in Gorton whilst mooching about the area for lids.

There are two of them (80ft), near to the resi, they were once wells, now capped and not in use...

Mayfield Station Re Re Re-visited

Ojay/MJS/CANDF...

Following an afternoon of drains, we decided to head over to the old ghost station..

The lads had never been, so in we dropped in for a few pics

The place is f00ked,
luckily we found shrooms and tripped absolute balls..

UMIST/HFLB (Again)

Ojay/Mjs/Clough...

So the LLS decided to head on over to Manc for some drains, I arrived earlier and met the two goons in the UMIST section of the Medlock.

I grabbed a couple of shots whilst I waited..

Clough fingered me up the bumhole

..And we headed down stream to the shit pipe which is HFLB

The Medlock was the lowest I've encountered for a long time,
even the shitpipe was odourless
