Steetley Magnesite (Chimney Abseil)

Ojay/BigJobs/Squirrell/Millhouse/Horus...

We planned some North East goonage over a week ago, besides it was BigJobs birthday so a perfect excuse for dicking around.

After a late start meeting up with Bigjobs & Millhouse, we headed over to Squirrells, who guess what, was late! (busy looking for his hat) FFS!

We had a few celebratory drinks on the way over to Horus' house along with a quick brew before heading on out into the nite.

Stocking up on some much needed energy products, we then preceded to spend the night climbing stuff and generally getting up to no good.

Eventually we were followed by some Fire Rescue dude at our last hit, so decided to call it a nite.. Well morning to be precise.

We headed on over to Hartlepool and parked the car up for the night at our favourite fast food venue before a few Zzzzz's.

As the sun started to rise, we prised ourselves from Bigjobs car, a couple of gulps of Red Bull and a short walk later and we were stood at the base of this 250ft + chimney - Steetley Magnesite.

Having seen a few reports from Steetley, personally I was only interested in the chimney, as the place is f00ked and basically one big Derp, even the pikey's have given up with the place.

Props to Bigjobs for his crude but effective access methods.. we were soon in.

..When I say in, we were inside the chimney, attempting to haul a shit load of kit up some seriously sketch ladders over 250ft.

"Ojay, can you haul these bags up" ..Err Squirrell

(BigJobs perched on a 5 inch girder with a 30ft drop below)

Eventually we all made it up to the top of this beast, we spent a good 15 minutes chilling out before Bigjobs was on with rigging the descent...

Stunning views
We couldn't have picked better conditions if we tried

Mandem

Jobs get's to work rigging shit

Squirrell checking the rope

It's a long way down

Right who's first?.. That'll be me then

Looking back up

Ojay - Rappelling your chimney's

Terraferma

Next up Squirrell

Followed by Millhouse - Sick!

Horus was too knackered and not feeling it, so Bigjobs dropped the ropes and they both climbed back down to meet us on the ground.

All in all an Epic 24 hours, and a belter of a birthday for Bigjobs.

Massive shout to everyone involved.

Angels Instead

Ojay/Bigjobs/Squirrell/Millhouse/Model H...

Since spreading its wings in February 1998 Antony Gormley's The Angel of the North has become one of the most talked about pieces of public art ever produced.

Made from 200 tonnes of steel and rising 20m with a wingspan of 54m, the Angel dominates the skyline, and can be seen from miles around.

And so it was, the North East and the Angel Of the North..

It has been something I had wanted to do ever since Stepping Lightly showed me his pics about 2 years ago after free climbing the structure and standing on the head (notworthy).

Massive props to Bigjobs for driving and rigging and Squirrell for grabbing the pics on one of the coldest nights in a good while :)

Getting up close and personal with the Angel
is an experience I'll never forget ;)

Tees Transporter Bridge, Middlesbrough

Ojay/BigJobs/Squirrell/Millhouse/Horus...

This our first hit of the evening turned out to be quite chilled (literally) as it was fooking freezing, welcome to the North East.

Some History:

Sir William Arrol & Co. Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Ltd.

Middlesbrough's bridge, which has come to visually define the town, was opened by Prince Arthur of Connaught in 1911.

A steel truss spans the 565ft between its two towers, clearing the water by 160ft and balanced by cantilevered end spans of 140ft each.

The end spans are anchored to the ground with steel cables, the suspended travelling compartment has been tested to a load of 80 tons.

It hangs by wires from a carriage that runs along the girders.

Sadly the only working example of a transporter bridge left in England.

Series 3 of Auf Wiedersehen Pet sees the lads dismantling the bridge in an attempt to sell it off to a native American tribe, basically it's one big clusterfuck but worth a watch just for lulZ

On with a few pics...

BigJobs climbed up a few girders and grabbed me this pic, I later joined him

Peacful

When we eventually climbed back down, we took the short drive to see Solomon's bench.

Leeds United FC, Elland Rd

Ojay/Squirrell...

As of March this year, the entire upper section of the East stand has been cleared and ripped out in preperation for a major re-development.

An extension to the existing East stand is to include:

A hotel, arcade/concourse area, conference and banqueting facilities, car parking, restaurants, retail, Class A2 uses, museum, nightclub and offices.

More info HERE

Having drove past here all week, I suggested to Squirrell we attempt a closer look.

After a quick recce we found a comedy way in, with the entire external lit up like an Xmas tree, we had to move fast, evading the cctv and the secca just around the corner.

We decided any pics were better than no pics, so we grabbed what we could in case we were busted...

After working our way through the site and clambering scaffold and woodwork we were soon on the up

The top floor appeared to be a plant room, so we made our way down to level 5 only to discover a locked door.

Next up, the new fourth floor - This is going to become the new boxes – (24 new boxes), and the new chairman’s suite & executive lounge.

Still very much a building site, the only real feature here was the kitchens.

The only lighting was emergency and the odd head torch, other than that the internals were fairly dark in comparison to the outside world.

We made our way down to the thrird floor, (all doors were coded and locked), our target the pitch itself.

This bit of stairwell was slightly lit from one of the 'site' lights

"A whole new experience awaits" eh..?

Well not quite..

As we headed on down to the second floor, Squirrell was busy taking some pics, when all of a sudden we heard noises below making there way towards us.

Then within a second the entire place lit up as the main lighting kicked F00k!

Time to run and GTFO! :D

Glad I grabbed this pic earlier
